Things are changing all the time
The one thing that remains the same in the world of OT is compassion. I think I can speak for all of my classmates when I saw we truly have a love and passion for the career and our future clients.
No matter the setting, there is a burning desire to truly look at the client as a whole and extend a helping hand.
Since my time at UTHSC, most of our guest speakers have told us a success story about OT, and how an OT has positively impacted them. Being that person to someone in their time of need is something that is so beautiful to me. Maybe the world will be a little better if we have more acts of kindness in our day to day life. We need more people in this world that will show the world love one kind act at a time, we need more occupational therapist.
My favorite thing about being "someone's person" is being able to help them with activities of daily living that we often take for granted. 2 years ago I had an accident that left me in a wheelchair for two months. Two months is not very long in the grand scheme of things, however, I learned quickly that there are so many things I took for granted. The one thing I can remember really missing was the ability to shower alone. Being able to self care and be clean is so crucial in daily living. Something about a shower can change your whole mood. We shower before bed, shower in the morning to wake up, shower to go meet some friends. It's a matter of dignity to most people, and for me I didn't lose my ability to only self care but I felt as I lost my dignity. In my opinion, I believe that in order to help someone with these personal daily task you have to have love and compassion for your job and the client in order to restore dignity.
